Braadkyaas Jamiekan (Broadcast Jamaican) is an unmatched, brand new mobile app where you can read and listen to the news in the Jamaican Language, Patwa, just like you would on radio and television. Plus, see the words scrolling as you listen, written like you have never seen it written before, in Jamaican patwa, a standard Casssidy-Jamaican Language Unit (JLU) writing system.

This app both entertains and educates. For you (unu) who already speak Jamaican, there will be the joy of hearing and seeing the language. Yu will miss yaad even more!! There is the fun of learning to read and write Jamaican the Jamaican Way. Puzzled about this weird new way to read and write this language, your language? See the letters on a beautifully designed, Jamaica themed, Cassidy-JLU alphabet card and hear them pronounced. After that, you can go back to listening and reading the news.

Also, if you are interested in ‘things Jamaican’, but yu not Jamaican yuself, this is the app for you too. You get the chance to hear the language spoken while the text scrolls and you can also hear, read and teach yourself popular Jamaican words and expressions. And, not sure what some of what you are hearing and seeing means? Just go to the English version of the news. The app is a very useful, fun language-learning tool for those millions of you out there who love Jamaican music, culture and style, and are anxious to learn the Jamaican Language.

Braadkyaas Jamiekan app is in collaboration with the Jamaican Language Unit (JLU), at the University of the West Indies (UWI). The news is uploaded to your device twice per day, Monday to Friday and is compiled and read by specially trained broadcasters within the JLU at UWI. Begin to understand Jamaican, Caribbean and international happenings from a truly Jamaican perspective, from the way we talk about them in the Jamaican Language.
